Drug Court is a deferred prosecution program intended to reduce recidivism by addressing the problem of drug addiction which lies at the heart of many criminal cases. Subject to the consent of the District Attorney’s Office, defendants with qualifying offenses are admitted to Drug Court where they participate in a long-term treatment program tailored to their individual needs. While in the program, Defendants may earn incentives, such as less frequent court dates, or sanctions, such as jail time, depending upon their performance. Upon successful completion of the program, their cases are dismissed.
Shelby County Drug Court was founded in 2002 and is among the oldest programs of its kind in the State of Alabama. In 2023, Shelby County Drug Court was recognized with the Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb Appreciation Award as the Best Drug Court Program in the state.
